Volleyball Setting – Location, Location, Location This post is in response to a number of recent emails with coaches looking for information on set location – In 2007, Nina Puikkonen Mortensen began work on her Masters Thesis at Brigham Young University.
The zones and heights were then combined to provide a two-digit specifier for each set. Thus, a standard high set to the outside (left) hitter is a 14 – zone 1, height 4. A middle quick is a 51 – zone 5, height 1. Now, for practical purposes most teams do not use the two digit calls in play.
Your setting location is the place where you are supposed to run your offense. This could vary slightly depending on your team and your coach, but typically this is the front right side of the court, between position 2 and position 3.
1 - on top of setters shoulder, right above the tape, very fast and low. 2 - normal high middle set, two or three feet away from setter. A - right behind setter, like a 1 (can also be hit by the right side hitter) B - about six feet behind setter, between right and middle blockers.

Setting Motion for Setting a Volleyball When you perform the volleyball set, you want to use both your arms and wrists to some degree. Your elbows should be slightly bent at the time of contact and your hands should be in the ready position as the ball contacts your fingers.
The numbers identify the serving order. 1. Volleyball position numbers. It’s also important to know that the position numbers DON’T CHANGE, but the players move through the positions. For example, position 2 is always in the front court on the right hand side, and position 6 is always in the middle of the back court.
